Globally, just under half (48%) of people interviewed report to have had a holiday or vacation (that involved travelling) in the last year. Just under 1 in 4 (23%) have had one holiday or vacation. The highest was seen in France (32%) and China (29%).
Singaporeans have travelled the least with 4 out of 5 (80%) not having had a holiday or vacation in the past 12 months, followed by the UK (68%) and Germany (61%).
Globally, domestic travel was most common over the past 12 months. Forty-five percent (45%) of respondents report to have travelled within their country and stayed with friends/ family and 44% stayed in a hotel.
Brazilian (64%), Indian (61%) and French (52%) respondents have stayed domestically with family and friends most. Domestic hotel accommodations were more utilised by Chinese (76%), Singaporean (60%) and US (50%) respondents.
Globally, 65% of respondents have planned a holiday or vacation in the coming year. Four out of 5 people in Mainland China report to have made plans, whilst just over half of UK and Singaporean respondents have planned holidays in the next 12 months.
Of those who do have plans in the next 12 months, 64% are rescheduled holidays or vacations due to the pandemic. French respondents have the highest number of newly planned holidays at 53%.
Three quarters of travel plans for the next year are domestic. This is highest for Mainland China (93%), Brazil (87%) and the US (85%).
Whilst local borders were closed at the time of interviewing respondents, Singaporeans report the highest intention of overseas travel in the next 12 months at 65%.
Air travel is reported to be the most frequented mode of travel transportation in the coming year at 45% globally (24% domestic and 21% internationally).
This is closely followed by car at 42%, with 39% being for domestic travel plans.
In the US, over half (52%) report their next trip will be domestic travel by car. Similarly in Europe, UK (42%), Germany (35%) and France (64%) say they will travel domestically by car.
Of the 26% of people who report to have international travel plans, 43% say their next trip will be to a European destination and 28% say they plan for a holiday in Asia.
For many, the overseas destinations are in relative proximity to their home location, with 2 in 3 Singaporeans having plans in Asia and 78% of Germans with plans in Europe.
However, half of Brazilians (50%) have plans to travel to Europe and just under a third of Indian respondents (29%) plan to travel to Australia/ Oceania.
Globally, hotels are the accommodation of choice for almost half of respondents (43%), both for international (49%) and domestic travel plans (40%) in the next 12 months.
Seventy-one percent (71%) of Chinese respondents plan to stay in a hotel, followed by 52% Singaporeans.
For Indian and Brazilian respondents with travel plans, staying with family or friends is the more popular travel plan (47% and 41% respectively).
Rented holiday accommodation is favoured in France, with 30% reporting that this is where they will be staying when travelling in the next 12 months.
Looking back to 2019, Asian travellers took the most flights pre-pandemic, with 39% of Indian and 37% of Singaporean respondents reporting two or more flights a year.
Globally, there is positivity amongst respondents regarding flying. Three out of 4 see themselves return to the same number of flights when restrictions are lifted.
Almost 9 out of 10 Chinese respondents believe they will travel the same amount as before. Lows are seen in the UK (66%) and Singapore (64%), a downturn from pre-pandemic levels.
